Research Interests
I am a Senior Research Scientist with the Center for Coastal Studies, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC). I am also a professor of the Ph.D. program in Coastal and Marine System Science and an adjunct professor with the Master Program in Environmental Science at TAMU-CC. I teach a graduate course in Aquatic Toxicology and have supervised several graduate students throughout my career. I have co-edited two books and authored or co-authored over 80 publications, among papers, book chapters and technical reports.
My research interests focus on marine ecotoxicology and have led me to develop toxicity test methods and survey the effects of contaminants on aquatic organisms in Brazil, New Zealand and the United States. My recent research has concentrated on:
- Application of sediment and porewater toxicity test methods to assess the acute and chronic effects of contaminants and of the bio- and photo-transformation products of organic contaminants on marine and estuarine organisms
- Assessment of the seasonal bioavailability of sediment-associated contaminants in the western Gulf of Mexico
- Toxicity assessment on hydrophobic organic contaminants in liquid samples
- Influence of nutrition on sensitivity of marine organisms to toxicants
- Toxicity assessments in the vicinity of coral reefs, including surveys in the Flower Garden Banks, Gulf of Mexico, USA; Hawaii, USA; Quintana Roo, Mexico; and Marinduque Island, Philippines
- Assessment of toxic effects of African dust to marine organisms, with aims to understanding its effects on Caribbean coral reefs
